MPS Recruitment Starts This Month

fallEven though it’s 80 degrees here in San Luis Obispo, fall is definitely in the air. When the calendar flips to September, I pack my suitcase and get ready to hit the road. Another MPS Recruiting Season is upon us, which means I’ll be visiting campuses throughout California and across the country.

I will visit as many as 40 campuses this year and will participate in graduate school fairs, information sessions and classroom presentations. I hope you can join me for a slice of pizza and a discussion about Cal Poly’s MPS in Dairy Products Technology program. We’re looking for 24 students for the 2017-2018 class, and we’d love to see your application.

My September schedule is below. If you would like to arrange a one-on-one meeting while I’m in your area, drop me a line, and we’ll set something up!

San Luis Obispo Ranked ‘Best College Town in America’

San Luis Obispo is home to a vibrant year-round farmer’s market that features nighttime entertainment, street food, and an extensive selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables.

San Luis Obispo, home to Cal Poly State University, was recently ranked America’s ‘Best College Town.’

The ranking appeared on the College Rank website. Author Kara Mayer Robinson researched hundreds of college towns nationwide before awarding San Luis Obispo the top spot. Rankings were based on a number of factors, including outdoor space, the number of boutiques and cafes, pedestrian friendliness, culture, nightlife and “the general vibe.”

“This collegiate town on California’s scenic central coast has a contagious kick-back-and-relax vibe,” Robinson wrote. “The stress you endured while applying to colleges will instantly melt away.”

San Luis Obispo, home to around 50,000 residents, is located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The city is surrounded by vineyards and farms and is only a few miles from well-known beach towns, such as Morro Bay and Pismo Beach.

“It’s not just college students who love the SLO life,” wrote Robinson. “Many people settle in here because of its culture, entertainment and surroundings.”

“Rolling hillsides, breathtaking ocean views and spectacular beaches are all part of the scenic landscape,” said Molly Kern, an executive with the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, in an interview for the story.

Robinson’s list of the top 10 college towns includes:

  1. San Luis Obispo, CA
  2. Cambridge, MA
  3. Gainesville, FL
  4. Amherst, MA
  5. Boulder, CO
  6. Burlington, VT
  7. Charlottesville, VA
  8. Ann Arbor, MI
  9. Santa Cruz, CA
  10. Athens, GA
